Harness, Brace, or Wheelchair: Where to Start?

Senior dog with mobility harness, brace, and wheelchair support options at home

It can be confusing to choose between a mobility harness, brace, or wheelchair. The right starting point depends on what your dog can still do comfortably and where they need help.

Consider a harness when

  • Your dog can walk but needs help standing, climbing, or balancing.
  • You need short-term support after surgery or during recovery.
  • You want controlled assistance for stairs, cars, or outdoor breaks.

Consider a brace when

  • A specific joint needs added support.
  • Your veterinarian recommends stabilizing an area.
  • Your dog still bears weight but needs extra confidence.

Consider a wheelchair when

  • Your dog has significant rear leg weakness or paralysis.
  • Your dog is mentally active but cannot walk well without support.
  • Your veterinarian agrees that cart support is appropriate.

When in doubt, start with your dog's diagnosis and daily routine rather than the product category alone.
